In Gospel of John, he recounts seven times that Jesus referred to Himself as “I AM.”
For the western mind, Jesus statements might seem trivial as in “I am the father of three children.” However, for the Jewish mind, “I AM” carries a strong spiritual connection with the God of Israel. The Hebrew spelling would be הָיָה. The Greek spelling is ἐγώ εἰμί. In both cases, there is nothing very important when speaking “I am.”
However, the relationship between these words and the Jewish Nation is very important. For the Nation Israel, “I AM” is the name of the God of salvation as He brought them out of Egypt.
In John 8:24 and John 8:54, Jesus clearly states that He can forgive sin and he is “I Am”, which by definition means that He is the God of Moses at the burning bush.
John 8:24 – I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.
John 8:58 – Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
In 2018 I preached a sermon series on this subject, “I AM.” In the coming weeks I will present those eight sermons. I hope you enjoy as we are about to embark upon this Bible Study together.
