Reading:
Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Luke 1:32-33 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Reflection:
Every human kingdom eventually falters under its own weight. Empires rise with promise and crumble in failure. Even Israel’s greatest kings: David, Solomon, and Josiah could not establish a government that would endure forever. Sin and power both lead to corruption, and death always marks the end of a reign. But Isaiah saw a throne that would never fail: “The government shall be upon his shoulder.” Not distributed among advisors, not shared with corrupt officials, but resting fully on one Person; the promised Son.
Isaiah gives Him five names, each revealing something essential to His character and reign.
He is Wonderful: beyond human comprehension, transcending all categories, doing what no mere man could ever accomplish. The Hebrew pele speaks of that which causes astonishment, the miraculous works that only God can perform.
He is Counselor: possessing infinite wisdom, needing no advice, the source of all true guidance. Earthly counselors fail; His counsel stands forever.
He is the Mighty God: El Gibbor in Hebrew, not a mighty god among many, but the Mighty God Himself. This is a direct claim to full deity. The One born in Bethlehem’s manger is the eternal God clothed in human flesh.
He is the Everlasting Father: not in confusion with God the Father, but as the eternal source and protector of His people. The phrase speaks of His eternality and His paternal care over those He redeems. He has no beginning and no end; He is the Father of eternity itself.
He is the Prince of Peace; not merely one who negotiates peace, but the One in whom peace originates and through whom peace flows. This is shalom in its fullest sense: wholeness, reconciliation, the end of hostility between God and man. His government brings what every human regime promises but cannot deliver, true and lasting peace.
Isaiah declared “of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end.” This is the Davidic throne established forever, not through political maneuvering but through divine decree. When Christ returns to reign in His millennial kingdom, He will rule from David’s throne in Jerusalem with perfect justice and righteousness. Every promise God made to David will find its ultimate fulfillment in the Son of David, the Lord Jesus Christ.
The world longs for stability and for leaders who are wise, just, and good. But every government built on human wisdom eventually fails. True peace and lasting government reign only under His rule. The throne of David is not vacant; it awaits its rightful occupant. And hope reminds us that the King is coming to claim what is His. One day, “every knee should bow…and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”[1]
Prayer:
- Worship Jesus as the Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace, asking Him to rule your heart today as He will one day rule the nations.
- Pray that His government would be upon your life and that His peace would reign within you.
Consider:
Pray by name for one leader, whether local, national, or in your church, asking God to give them wisdom and a heart that seeks counsel from Christ, the true Counselor.
